20040513 Setting Rte 140 bridge girders

Setting new bridge girders for the Maryland Route 140 bridge over Rte 27. Late in the evening of May 12th, 2004 and well into the morning of May 13th, 2004, Caroline, Jeff Glass and I went over to observe Kibler Construction... set the new steel girders in a continuing phase of the reconstruction of the Maryland Route 140 bridge over Maryland Route 27 just north of Westminster, MD. The weight of the girders required the use of a special crane. The crane was set up underneath the bridge on Maryland Route 27. Maryland Route 27 and 140 were closed from 9 pm to 5 am for five consecutive nights beginning on May 10, 2004, in order to perform the work. The original bridges were built in 1953 just before Maryland Route 140 was opened at a dedication ceremony led by Maryland Governor Theodore McKeldin on July 1, 1954. In the following photo, a steel girder used in the original construction of the bridges is transported through Westminster in and around 1953... Followed by a photo of that location in Westminster on April 18, 2007. The next two photos depict the area of the bridges as it looked in 1953... The $13.4 million project to rebuild the Maryland Route 140 bridges over Maryland Route 27 and Maryland Route 97 further west began in September 2003. The first several images are historical photos and the balance of the pictures were taken by me the evening and morning of May 12-13, 2004. The next photo is what the area looked like in 1954, right after Rte 140 opened. In this view ...
