Made in Germany | New Life for the Steel Industry

5 years in construction, Thyssen Krupp Steel's blast furnace number 8 has now fired up in Duisburg. It is 15 years since the last one was built, but Asia's insatiable demand for raw materials means the future is bright. The new furnace cost a quarter of a billion euros and is expected to repay the investment quite soon. Capable of processing 6000 tonnes of raw iron a day, it has secured long-term jobs for 1200 in-house and 3600 outside employees. The international steel boom is forecast to continue, which is why Thyssen Krupp Steel has invested some 6 million euros in developing its steel capacity world-wide. A report by Hagen Tober.
